Intro

The SQE1 marking scheme can feel like a mystery - the marking method is opaque and past papers aren't provided, so it can feel unnerving to know whether you're on track.

We're here to help demystify the score in our own way, by sharing what we've noted after dozens of interviews, chats and data-points collected from Law Drill users who sat the SQE1 exam - both from people who passed and people who failed.

THE QUESTION: What should I be scoring on Law Drills to be in a good position to pass the SQE1 exam?

THE QUESTION: What should I be scoring on Law Drills to be in a good position to pass the SQE1 exam?

THE QUESTION: What should I be scoring on Law Drills to be in a good position to pass the SQE1 exam?

THE ANSWER: Aim for >63% on Law Drills MCQs

THE ANSWER: Aim for >63% on Law Drills MCQs

THE ANSWER: Aim for >63% on Law Drills MCQs

Note: this is an update from the previous guideline of 70% as we've increased the difficulty of questions on Law Drills to more closely mirror the real exam

Based on the Jan 2025 exam sitting, we've noted that dedicated users scoring >63% in Law Drill MCQs are much more likely to score >300 (i.e. pass) in SQE1 than users scoring <63% on Law Drills.

In fact, 78% of people who scored above 63% on Law Drills MCQs passed their SQE 1 exam.

This isn't a guarantee, of course, and there are plenty of other factors at play, including how you manage your time and energy on test day. It's a long and intense exam, so you need to prepare accordingly (we offer a timed exam mode for this very reason). And of course, there's also noise around the 'test' that you end up receiving, as there are multiple variations(!).

But this 63% rule is solid based on all the data we have, and is where we now set our guidelines.

This 63% threshold was found in both the FLK1 and FLK2 papers.

And the 63% threshold also translates into most of the subject areas within SQE1
(e.g. >63% in Dispute Resolution on Law Drills translated into >300 in Dispute Resolution)

Note 1: You need to do a good amount of MCQs in each subject, so our guidance is to do at least 50 MCQs in the subject area before you start to think about this 63% guideline.

Note 2: We recommend preparing with a wide range of tools (mocks, flashcards, books, classes) to best position yourself to pass SQE1. Law Drills is a complementary tool, not a solo tool!

We'll continue to update these guidelines as we learn more. We'll also release more research as we improve the platform and tools to help you better prepare, pass the SQE and be on your way to practising law as a qualified solicitor
